Cicadas are the insect breed that is associated with a major insect group of hoppers. It is even referred that this insect is a combination of froghopper and leafhopper in terms of its character. Cicadas belong to the super family Cicadoidea widely recognized by its unique noise when it flies. In the life cycle of this species, the hatching period varies depending upon the type of brood and is called as periodical cicadas. There about fifteen distinctively known types of broods hatching at different periods. A brood called Cicadas 19 was recently hatched in the southern parts of United States after 13 years of underground life. Until such period the nymphs of cicadas undergo five stages of mutation between the constructed tunnels by feeding on the plant root's nutrients for their growth.
After making exit to the surface in spring, they start multiplying themselves once again and prolong their devastation of the plants even above the surface by sucking the nutrients through the veins of leaves. Flying mass of cicadas produce noise population around the garden, and it becomes nuisance for about six weeks, which consists of their mating and egg laying period. The life of adults expires after that, followed by the tunneling of nymphs into the soil.
The large sized Cicada insect is not harmful to human, but then they make no mistake when it comes to damaging plants. It is up to the gardener to make the choice, whether to prevent the damage or to control the insect population which of course a tough task to make up. Giving chance to feed the plants and provide them the area for proliferation will be the two absolute factors for Cicadas to revamp once again after 13 years of the cycle. In order to retard them from continuing it necessary steps have to be taken to keep them away from feeding the plant leaves because it serves as their survival factor.
It is presumed that application of organic Neem oil can possibly stop the insect from feeding as it acts as an anti-feedant against insect and makes the plants unsuitable for feed. Rather spraying unknown insecticide to control the cicadas it is worth giving a trial of neem oil spray atleast to stop their food supply that can eventually lead to interruption of its life cycle. Avoid the Cicadas' nuisance with effective application of neem oil.
