Fire ants are always a menace in the garden, and it is a fate of Gardeners to fight against them in order to protect their plants. Red imported Fire ants is a species of fire ants that are spread widely in United States, parts of South America, Australia, etc. Also these ants are considered to be venomous among ants. Native of this insect is South America, and it is supposed that it got imported to United States by means of Cargo ship goods.
The significant attack of this insect is observed in humans and farm animals as both involve in disturbing their habitat. It is advantageous for Red imported Fire ants (apparently termed as RIFA) to reside in a cluttered garden area which suits the conditions required for its survival rather in any other place. Gardens are strictly targeted by these ants and form a nest with the help of burrowed soil particles within the plant area. Consequently, this activity of Red imported Fire ants upset the plant life causing loss to gardeners. They even directly feed on vegetables grown in the backyard. So keeping them in progress with a careless approach can not only intensify their population but also decides the destiny of crops’ life.
Stepping onto the ants’ nest without notice while pruning or watering the plants is the deed often committed by Gardeners before getting the stings. This insect further tries to invade into the living space when left without control, and it is a big mess for the Gardeners to stay inside. Sting of the insect is observed to infuse a toxin into the skin that reacts with the inner cells of skin causing an infection that more or less resembles the disease of necrosis. Considering all these potential hazards due to this insect it is the duty of Gardeners to take necessary measures to control them.
It is impossible to eradicate them, but it is possible to control them and therefore, choosing an effective repelling spray is vital. With the availability of Organic horticultural oils like Neem oil it is possible to keep the ants away from the garden area competently. Spraying of Neem oil can be done simple without any conditions except the issue of ensuring product certification. An EPA certified Neem oil is well and good for application or for the purpose of trial on the plants as the product is eco-friendly and does not cause any side effects in the cultivated area. Neem oil also acts as an anti-feedant that makes vegetables unsuitable for ants to feed.
