Neem
has its own identity of controlling pests
in farms. It is known that Neem and its
every part have a well defined use for both
humans as well as for the environment. This
Eco-friendly plant is being used in the
form of powder or oil as a pest repulsive
component in various farms and household
gardens. In spite of all these areas of
application, neem is also been in adopted
in coffee gardens in hilly areas for the
same purpose of eradicating pests.
Coffee estates are developed over the mountain
regions with a fact that coffee plants need
more sunlight radiation for photosynthesis.
In these fields, the energy resource called
biomass is believed to be higher in its
availability due to the organic wastes left
by the living organisms. Biomass materials
include the forest remains like wooden chips,
garbage, animal wastes, dead trees, etc.
These resources can lead to the generation
of electricity if it is effective collected
and used. However, in the case of coffee
estates, these biomasses are left unnoticed
as the coffee plants are closely grown like
a belt. And farmers find difficult to collect
them all because coffee estates are adopted
in large acres over the hill. Finally, these
remains serve to be the source for the invasion
of pests and insects into the fields thereby
creating inefficiency in the coffee plants.
In order to avoid the menace of pests, neem
oil, a valuable bio-pesticide
is used both as a fertilizer and a pest
resistant to the crops. Neem is found to
be a catalyst of regulating nitrogen when
mixed with the nitrogenous fertilizers,
for providing essential nitrogen to the
plants making sure the fertile growth. Thus
neem in the form powder is combined along
with the fertilizer and supplied through
the irrigation water using sprinklers. Neem
oil is supplied to the field along with
the fertilizer only if drip method of irrigation
is used because sprinkling of neem oil over
the coffee plants can cause burns when plant
leaves get exposed to high sunlight radiation.
Neem trees were grown near the farms as
they have the capacity of cleaning the polluted
air which reduces the global warming in
turn. Furthermore, the tree is helpful in
holding the storm water in soil preventing
the drain due to the slopes in the field.
Thus the above mentioned application of
neem in the coffee estates can assure the
production even more effective and profitable.
