Neem oil Vs other types of insecticides:

Insecticides are used to terminate insects of course, but the efficiency of an insecticide depends upon its source, which means, whether it is derived from nature or prepared synthetically using certain formulas. In case of artificial method, lots of variations in the ingredients and their concentration were worked in the laboratory giving rise to different types of insecticides. Basically, insecticides are categorized into three main types, namely:

  • Systemic or Universal insecticides
  • Contact type of insecticides and
  • Ingested or digestive type of insecticides

Systemic or universal type of insecticides is used to develop insect resistive character in plants by their application through the soil medium. The active ingredients present in the product are absorbed by the plant from the soil and by their intrinsic cycle the parts of the plant acquire the resistant and toxicity against insects. The effect of this insecticide remains for days that help in reducing frequent spraying of insecticide in fields.

Contact type of insecticide is an instant killing insecticide that can be used in place where the insects need to get rid off in short period of time. This type of insecticide can terminate insects at the time of its application rather than defending after its course. General household insecticides come under this type.

Some insecticides reveal the effect after its ingestion by organism. This refers to ingested type of insecticides. This may be of solid form and are mainly used to kill pests like rats and roaches. These are available in the market along with the directions that makes easy in handling and does not require any skill unlike the use of other insecticides.

How Neem oil differs?
Firstly, Neem oil is an organic insecticide means it does not affect the environment on its use. Azadirachtin, an active constituent of neem that depicts its insecticidal property has been the key for the EPA to evaluate Neem as one of the best among natural insecticides. Moreover, the above mentioned types of insecticides and their characteristics were all observed in one, neem oil.

Neem oil can be used,

  • In soil to repel ground insects and pests,
  • In the form of cakes for controlling rats and roaches.
  • In areas of the insect breeding for complete eradication.

Even EPA advises farmers of US to use certified Neem oil for effective control of insects. Comparatively, the cost of neem oil is also less.
