Saintpaulia well known as African violet is a flowering plant found largely in Africa and parts of America. Beautiful violet flowers are the prominent feature of this plant, thus it is mostly preferred indoor. The plant gives an ornamental appearance when grown inside the living space. It appears to be a healthy plant, but it is not so if persistent care is missing. All indoor plants need extra care than usual outdoor plants because of the reason that they are adopted in an incompatible area lacking natural sunlight for their growth. African violet is supposed to be a most treasured indoor plant by the people of America, and they end up recoiled with its abnormal effects due to various pests. Infestations in this plant are caused by a series of pests like the spider mites, aphids, mealy bugs, earwigs, pill bugs, etc.
Among all these, notable infestation of plant is caused by an insect called Cyclamen mite, which is microscopic than spider mites. Attack of this insect is common in indoor plants, and so it is considered to be serious. The plant seems to be healthy in the initial stage of attack but suddenly the leaves of the plant start to crumble, twist and warped at the end. Gardeners are left with no time to cure the plant and the only thing they can do it to throw off the infected plant and start growing a new one.
Unless and until a proper control measure is taken, the plant is expected to invite cyclamen mites for action, which is inevitable in indoor. Moreover, mites’ infection on plants is difficult to treat and preventive control is the only possible way to protect African violet from the cyclamen mites. For prevention, insecticides are the apt products but for indoor plants it needs some consideration like the side effects on the spray of insecticide inside the living room. In such a case, it is wise to go for organic insecticide sprays that can be eco-friendly, and it also serves the purpose.
Organic Neem oil certified by EPA can be an effective product to control mites, in particular, with its powerful odor and insecticidal content Azadirachtin. Neem oil sprays are available in handy bottles and economical sachets in the market using which a precise spray can be made over the plant with or without the identification mites on a regular basis. Note: Neem oil spray should be done after covering the nearby space to avoid stains.
