Seasonal crops for late October like beans, radishes, broccoli, Cucumbers, Corn, cabbage, turnips, etc. are grown in the backyard garden with less care. The reason for the improper care would be a lack of watering the plants during late summer season that directs lack of monitoring the conditions. Such inefficient job of a gardener can drive some destructive pests into the garden which mainly includes Aphids.
Aphids are kind of plant lice found generally in temperate districts and are distinctively called as sap sucking insects. They are observed to have spread worldwide either by migration or by meteorological effects that carry them. Aphids are tiny pale green colored insects that particularly feed on the sap of a plant and also some other vital parts ensuring complete destruction of the plant. The population of the insect multiplies rapidly directly by giving birth to young ones instead of laying eggs over coldest season months leading to nymphs looking identical to the mother species and the type of reproduction carried is called Parthenogenesis (which means development of embryos is carried without fertilization by a male species). Due to the rapid growth of population, the Cash crop's cultivation in temperate regions is found to be at high risk that makes them to be considered as a serious pest by some forest and agricultural departments.
Managing Aphids is an easy when they are identified at early winter, as on later stage of the season it will be difficult to control by conventional treatment methods. The gardener has to face the consequences if the inefficient care persists. In order to treat aphids, detection becomes the prior necessary process needs to be carried out. Since the insect feed on sapping part and leaves, they are largely found under the leaves. They are likely to secrete a sticky sweet substance that invites ants and some other insects for protecting the eggs that are laid under the leaves and stalk of the plant. The role of ants is important in the population growth of aphids as they carry the aphid’s eggs to their hole and milk using their antenna. Therefore, it becomes very vital to control ants in addition to the aphids in one shot to eradicate the menace completely caused by aphids.
Organically, it is proven that the Aphid's groups are controlled effectively than by the application of synthetic pesticides. One such organic product, Neem oil is regarded as the Best for Aphid treatment, and it is proven to control most of the aphid species efficiently. Spraying neem oil on the below half of the plants will eventually reduce the ants as well as the aphid nymphs. Other organic methods involve encourage of some beneficial insects like ladybird, crab spiders and hover fly larvae which can reduce the aphid groups.
