Grooming of horse is not an easy work to
do. It needs intense care every single day
as the animal is vulnerable to various infections.
Infections that most commonly occur in horses
include sweet itch, equine thrush, mud fever,
rain scald, etc. Among those, equine thrush
and sweet itch are pathetic ailments. Horses
are known for their skin beauty but these
infections make the condition worse and
even some are fatal to the animal. The infestations
are seen around the parts like hoof, frog,
coronet, croup, hocks and at the back of
horse. These areas necessarily require additional
care to avoid the attack. The causes of
infestations will be due to poor hoof care,
insufficient diet, irregular growth in hoof,
less blood circulation in the frog, lack
of exercise, dampness over the skin and
standing over the dirt for long time. In
addition, during the winter season the influx
of the diseases is likely to occur and spread
rapidly. Therefore, it needs proper monitoring
and care throughout the cold months. Before
adopting the treatment for ailments it is
necessary to understand the characteristics
of the disease.
In case of Equine thrush, the infection
is caused by a bacterium called Fusobacterium
Necrophorum, which belongs to anaerobic
type of bacteria. The characteristic attack
of these bacteria involves devour of frog
forming black pus around the frog that cause
a fetid smell and finally lead to lameness
of the foot. It is easy to cure thrush if
it is identified at early stages but if
left unnoticed the devouring becomes intense,
and it eats the whole frog making deep grooves
in the hoof. Treatment
measures for thrush will include habitual
trimming and picking of hoof, keeping the
frog free from moisture by proper cleaning
and through medication by applying organic
mineral oil like pure neem oil, which has
anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory properties.
Massage
Neem oil over the frog as well as in the
bulb to prevent the further invasion of
the bacteria effectively.
In case of sweet itch, the attack is predominantly
caused by allergic saliva of Culicoides
midges. The bites of midges create large
sores over the skin and cause severe irritation
to the animal. On later stage the sores
are infected by bacteria leaving pyoderma
with inflammation. This disease is a seasonal
type which means it occurs commonly during
winter periods when the moisture content
is more in the air. Moisture is major source
for the spread of this disease. Treatment
of itches is done using Pure Neem oil around
the infested parts. Since neem oil is anti-inflammatory,
anti-bacterial, anti-septic and anti-viral,
it withholds the further increase of the
disease in the animal. Regular applying
of Neem
oil will serve better results in the
treatment. Neem
soap can be used while bathing the animal
when such sores exist. Other horse infections
like the mud fever and rain scald were also
observed to be treated by Neem oil efficiently.
