Cankerworms are small insects, which eat
leaves causing holes in the leaves which
look like a skeleton with only the veins.
Cankerworms are dangerous because it can
destroy even an orchard farm, and it can
spoil the overall health of any tree in
a period of time. These worms are also known
as inchworms because they grow up to a maximum
of 1 inch in length.
Types of cankerworms
The two types of cankerworms are spring
and Fall cankerworms. If you are having
a cherry, oak, maple farms you need to be
careful with cankerworms. Because if you
do not take enough care on eliminating these
worms for more than two years, it will definitely
spoil the overall health of each tree you
have in your farm.
Lifecycle and Growth of cankerworms
Cankerworms grow up to 25mm, i.e. roughly
1 inch and Fall cankerworms has three pairs
of legs, and fall cankerworms have two pairs
of legs, which are connected through their
body. It lays eggs in the fall season and
eggs of both spring and fall cankerworms
will hatch on the spring season.
Solution for stopping cankerworm
Neem oil can be the best solution on stopping
cankerworms. It can kill both these type
of worms as soon the neem oil touches the
cankerworm. To get better results, you need
to use neem soap to eliminate these worms
spreading out in the trees. You need to
spray the neem oil on all the parts of the
leaves and apply directly on the worm's
body. Early spring season is the best time
to apply this idea because the cankerworms
will be just hatched and the cankerworms
would not have grown to their full length.
However, this can be a temporary solution,
as applying neem oil for only one time will
never eliminate cankerworms permanently
because if you apply once, neem
oil can eliminate cankerworms and stop
them spreading for about 2 to three weeks,
if you leave it for more than 1 month period,
there is always a chance for the new born
cankerworms occupying your trees again.
If you apply neem soap for a time period
of about 30 days regularly you will definitely
eliminate both types of cankerworms from
your farm. Neem oil is a natural insecticide,
applying it on your trees will cause no
harm to the trees.
