Weed is generally considered as a menace
in farms. After the pest, weed is the most
harmful factor in a farm which damages the
crops. Weed in a definition, is a plant
which grows at unexpected places densely
and spread over a large area affecting the
growth of the farm plants as well as create
health issues for farmers. They are supposed
to perform negative effects in the farm
like spreading of pest pathogens to the
crops, consuming the essential nutrients
NPK (nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous)
in the soil thereby reducing their amount
of availability and retards the exposure
to sunlight. Farmers face heavy losses due
to weed growth. Their growth is found to
be massive in moist fields like sugarcane
farms where the irrigation water is applied
up to certain centimeters above the soil
medium and left for the whole day for its
fertility. Controlling of weeds is a hectic
job for a farmer to as they densely populate
themselves. Weeds can be controlled either
by the manual process or by organic control
method.
Manual process includes.
- Planting of crops densely in order to
avoid the growth of weeds
- Digging and hoeing of the weeds from
the farms using special tools
Organic control method includes.
- Spraying acidic vinegar on the weed
grown places, especially near its roots
- Application of lemon juice on farms
which is considered as an acid based weed
controller.
- Rock salt another organic weed controller
can be mixed with the farm soil.
- Sprinkling of Neem
oil over the weeds can prevent the
transfer of microbial pathogens onto the
plants as it is well known that
- Neem oil has the anti-fungal and anti-microbial
properties.
Note: Don't apply or spray the acidic
vinegar or lemon juice extract in the farm
when there is heavy rainstorm because the
acetic acid present in both vinegar and
lemon will get debased easily when reacts
with water. Therefore, the purpose of their
application will be a flop one.
Try to use Neem and its products like Neem
oil, Neem
bark powder and Neem
oil cake widely in the farm to not only
control weeds but also the other unwanted
flora growing along with the cash crops.
Moreover, it also serves as an effective
bio-pesticide. Thus two way benefits are
gained by the farmers by the simple application
of neem.
