Pesticides
in farms play a major of controlling pests
which are considered as a menace by the
farmers. Moreover it is a hectic job for
them to eradicate them completely from the
farms so they opt for the use of synthetic
or artificial pesticide that are specially
prepared by chemical compounds which can
hinder the breeding of pests in farms. Though
these chemically prepared pesticides are
tested effective against various pests in
laboratory conditions, they found to be
ineffective in the fields. They not only
being ineffective but also cause some side
effects in the field conditions and plant
life. These pesticides also spreads their
negative effects to the nearby water bodies
when washed into the streams or lakes by
the rainwater and species feeding that contaminated
water will also get affected. Thus pesticides
even though has its benefits one side also
has its drawbacks on the other side. The
pros and cons of a pesticide include:
Benefits of pesticides:
- Cost of synthetic pesticides seems to
be less available in larger quantities.
It also reduces of the cost of labors
working in the farms monitoring the growth
of pests and their damages caused in order
to eradicate them. Spraying of pesticide
requires labor depending upon the size
of the farms mostly an individual is enough
to finish the job of spraying pesticides
throughout the farm.
- Various types of pesticides are available
in the market for eradicating particular
pest group with variation in quantities
and concentration.
- Pesticide has vast area of application.
It can be used at farms, gardens and even
for household purpose like controlling
termites. It protects the humans and pets
from spreading of harmful diseases caused
by those pests and insects.
Drawbacks of pesticides:
- Application of synthetic pesticides
in farms firstly affects the growth of
plants. Chemical compounds in the pesticides
are unbreakable by the earth microbes
and this causes them get sedimented near
the roots of the plants thereby making
the supply of essential NPK inefficient.
Thus this inefficiency causes the shortening
in the growth of crops.
- Pesticides percolate into the soil by
the action of rain water and get mixed
with the ground water which makes it contaminated.
- Fertility of the soil is another side
effect of pesticides. They inhibit the
storage of Nitrogen and other essentials
in soil.
- Draining of pesticides into the nearby
stream or lake can contaminate the source
and also causes loss of living organisms
that feeds the water.
- Spraying of pesticides makes the lighter
and toxic compounds to be suspended into
the air which in turn causes air borne
diseases and nasal infection to those
who inhale the compounds.
- They reduce the resistivity of the plants
from other harmful micro-organisms.
As a remedial measure it is advised to
use Organic pesticides like Neem
oil, karanja oil which are supposed
to be manufactured from the ingredients
of natural neem and karanja tree. Environment
Protection Agency of United States of America
has evaluated these two products as the
best bio-pesticidal products.
